Trump Administration's Iran Conflict: Public Opinion & Unanswered Questions | CBS News Poll Analysis (2026)

Most Americans feel the Trump administration has not clearly explained the U.S.' goals in the conflict with Iran, according to a recent CBS News poll. This lack of clarity is closely tied to public support for the administration's actions. The longer people believe the conflict will persist, the more they disapprove. Half of the country anticipates the conflict will take months or even years to resolve. When individuals perceive a lack of explanation from the administration, they tend to believe the conflict will be longer or express uncertainty about its duration. Furthermore, a significant portion of Americans currently views the military action as making the U.S. less safe rather than more safe. Americans hold diverse opinions regarding the administration's objectives, with many believing there are multiple goals. Those who support the administration's actions often cite stopping nuclear weapons, preventing terrorism, or aiding the Iranian people as key objectives. However, some also express a more cynical perspective, suggesting that the primary goal is to gain political advantage in the U.S. Overall, a majority of Americans disapprove of the administration's handling of the conflict. Yet, the president's Republican and MAGA supporters remain steadfastly behind the action, believing it enhances U.S. safety. This survey recontacted individuals who were initially interviewed for a poll conducted last week, prior to the start of airstrikes. Interestingly, a slightly higher proportion of people approved of military action specifically to prevent nuclear weapons last week compared to the current approval rate for the action generally. This discrepancy can be attributed to those who have since moved to disapproval, citing the administration's failure to explain its goals and their belief that the conflict will be prolonged or uncertain in duration. Two-thirds of the population believes the administration should seek approval from Congress for further military action, a view that aligns with the opinions expressed by Republicans regarding U.S. military action in Venezuela. This CBS News/YouGov survey, conducted on March 2-3, 2026, involved a nationally representative sample of 1,399 U.S. adults recontacted after the start of U.S. military action against Iran. It was based on an initial survey conducted before the U.S. military action from February 25-27, 2026, using a nationally representative sample of 2,264 U.S. adults. The margin of error for the total sample in the recontact survey is ± 3.2 points.
