A dramatic manhunt is currently underway for a convicted robber who managed to escape from an open prison located on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.
Michael Dunn, aged 53, absconded from HMP Standford Hill around 8:55 AM on Saturday, as confirmed by Kent Police. This individual had been sentenced to six years and four months in September 2023 after he admitted to committing robbery offenses in Maidstone.
At the time of his disappearance, Mr. Dunn was last spotted wearing a grey hoodie, dark trousers, black trainers, and a black hat coupled with a scarf, according to police reports. Authorities are actively pursuing several leads in their efforts to locate him and are urging the public to assist in the search.
This incident follows closely on the heels of three prisoners who escaped from HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire on New Year's Day; those individuals have since been apprehended.
In a related development, it was announced in November that HMP Standford Hill will undergo expansion as part of the government's initiative to create an additional 14,000 prison spaces, aimed at addressing overcrowding issues.
Understanding Open Prisons
Open prisons, often referred to as Category D facilities, are characterized by their minimal security measures. These institutions typically house inmates nearing the end of their sentences, providing them with an environment that facilitates reintegration into society.
Due to overcrowding in higher-security prisons, recent policy adjustments have made it possible for more inmates to qualify for transfers to these open conditions earlier in their sentences.
An "abscond" refers to an escape where the individual does not need to breach a physical barrier or restraint, which is exclusively applicable to open prison settings.
According to Mark Drury, a sitting governor, the increase in inmates being housed in less secure environments raises significant concerns about public safety. In a statement made last November as a representative for open prison governors at the Prison Governors' Association, he highlighted to Sky News that facilities that had not experienced any absconds for many years are now suddenly witnessing an uptick in such incidents.
While the Ministry of Justice has yet to release updated statistics, it was reported that there were 57 absconds in the year ending March 2025, with 15 of those individuals remaining at large for over 30 days.
