Bold update: a major water disruption in Butler affects dozens of households, and the clock is ticking on a rapid fix. Here’s what happened, why it matters, and what to expect next.
Butler, PA — Emergency repairs are underway after a massive water main break early Saturday in the City of Butler. Pennsylvania American Water posted an alert saying crews are working along 5th Avenue and West New Castle Street to address a significant rupture in the water system.
The incident began around 7:30 a.m. and eyewitness footage shared with Action News 4 shows a powerful geyser of water erupting from the road. Additional videos captured at least one home sustaining water intrusion. A PA American Water spokesperson later told Pittsburgh's Action News 4 that water service has been shut off in the affected area to facilitate repairs.
In total, about thirty customers are impacted by the break. Officials anticipate restoring water service by Saturday evening, though residents in the zone may experience little to no water as crews work to seal the break and assess the damage. The repair window could extend up to eight hours, depending on the extent of the rupture and any incidental issues.
Crews arrived on the scene hours after the incident, and 5th Avenue has since been closed to traffic as a safety measure. By noon, the road remained closed while crews proceed with repairs and system testing.
