During a tense encounter between Germany's Laura Siegemund, ranked No. 48, and Australian wildcard Maddison Inglis, ranked No. 168, a peculiar situation arose that left Siegemund understandably irate. Siegemund, who had just pulled off a significant upset against the 18th seed Liudmila Samsonova in her previous match, found herself in a precarious position in the second set. Serving at 5-5 and facing a break point at 15-40, she desperately needed a strong serve to stay in the game.
And she delivered! Siegemund struck what appeared to be a clean ace. However, in a baffling turn of events, the chair umpire intervened and ordered the point to be replayed. The reason? The umpire claimed Inglis wasn't ready when Siegemund served.
But here's where it gets controversial... Just minutes before this incident, Siegemund had received a warning for taking too long on her serve. Known for her deliberate pace, she often utilizes the full 25 seconds allowed between points. Under pressure and mindful of the previous warning, she was being extra cautious, even watching the clock.
Siegemund vocally expressed her disbelief to the umpire: "I was watching the time. You gave me a serve miss? So if she’s not ready, it’s ok?" She further questioned the inconsistency, saying, "It’s unbelievable, and if I don’t serve, you give me a missed serve? If I say she wasn’t ready, you will say ‘I didn’t see it’." Siegemund explained that she hadn't even noticed if Inglis was ready, as her focus was on the clock and avoiding another time violation.
Despite her protests, Siegemund was compelled to replay the serve. Unfortunately for her, Inglis seized the opportunity, securing the break and then serving for the match. While Siegemund showed incredible resilience, breaking back at 6-5 and forcing a tie-break which she won to send the match into a decider, the momentum had clearly shifted.
Ultimately, Inglis triumphed in a nail-biting third-set super tie-break, winning 7-6(10-7) after a gripping one and a half hours of play following the contentious moment.
And this is the part most people miss... While Siegemund's singles campaign ended, she remains a strong contender in the doubles. She's partnered with 2020 Australian Open singles champion Sofia Kenin and they've already advanced. She's also competing in mixed doubles!
For Maddison Inglis, this victory marks her second appearance in the third round of the Australian Open, a feat she last achieved in 2022. After navigating a tough qualifying draw and two intense three-set matches, she's guaranteed a significant jump in the WTA rankings, potentially nearing the Top 100.
