India Changed My Life: A Zambia Student’s IIT Bombay Journey (2026)

A Zambian's Journey to India's IIT: Unlocking a World of Opportunities

Imagine a young Zambian, inspired by their parents' work ethic, dreaming of a world beyond borders. This is the story of a student whose life took a dramatic turn when they embarked on a journey to India's prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

The Call of India:

Growing up in Lusaka, Zambia, the author's parents instilled a strong work ethic and a belief in the power of education. The father's travels across Africa as a truck driver showcased dedication, and the mother's encouragement fueled a desire to explore the world. This led to a pivotal moment: the Study in India scheme and the opportunity to attend Marwadi University in Gujarat.

A Life-Changing Scholarship:

The scholarship was a game-changer, covering tuition, food, and accommodation. The Ind-SAT exam, taken in 2020, opened doors to a new world. But here's where it gets controversial—while the scholarship provided immense support, it didn't cover everything, leaving some financial aspects to be managed independently.

The IIT Dream:

After completing their BTech, the author's ambition grew. They sought a specialized path to contribute to Zambia's infrastructure. Construction Technology and Management at IIT Bombay became the ultimate goal. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship, without the need for JEE or GATE, offered a straightforward yet challenging path: excel academically and wait patiently.

The Long Wait:

The selection process, with its many stages, tested patience. Months passed before an offer was issued, followed by embassy verification. The ICCR scholarship, covering tuition, flights, and a stipend, provided a safety net for this international student.

Life at IIT Bombay:

Arriving at IIT Bombay marked a new beginning. The initial shock of being alone and the longing for Zambian food were softened by the warmth of the people. A routine emerged: classes, workouts, self-study, football, and piano. The campus life, with its academic rigor and supportive faculty, unlocked hidden potential.

Lessons from IIT:

One of the most profound realizations was the impact of one's environment. Surrounded by brilliant minds at IIT, the author's growth was inevitable. This experience reshaped their perspective on personal capabilities and responsibilities toward their country.

Looking Ahead:

As graduation approaches, the goal is clear: contribute to Zambia's development. The author plans to return home, potentially after gaining international experience. Every lesson learned and skill acquired at IIT Bombay will be brought back to Zambia, where the real impact will be made.

India's IIT has not only provided an education but also a new perspective on life and a sense of global citizenship. And this is the part most people miss—the power of an international education to transform not just individuals but also their home countries. What do you think? Is this a fair assessment of the impact of studying abroad, or does it overlook certain challenges? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
