Galashiels Town Centre Makeover: Revitalizing an Eyesore (2026)

A bold transformation is on the horizon for the heart of Galashiels, as a local developer steps up to rejuvenate a long-standing 'eyesore'. The former Douglas Bridge Hotel, a 135-year-old landmark, has been a source of concern due to its deteriorating upper floors. But here's where it gets controversial: the building's new owner, Thirlestane Investments, is ready to invest heavily in a major refurbishment, aiming to restore its former glory.

Director Matt Morrison acknowledges the building's current state, saying, "It has indeed been an eyesore, but we're committed to breathing new life into it." The ambitious plans include replacing 58 windows, restoring unique features, and implementing modern heating and insulation. Even solar panels on the roof are being considered, showcasing a commitment to sustainability.

But why is this project so significant? Galashiels has been undergoing town-centre regeneration since the Borders Railway reopened a decade ago. Yet, many central streets still struggle with vacant shops and neglected properties. This refurbishment is part of a larger effort to revitalize the town centre and bring new life to its historic buildings.

And this is the part most people miss: the sale of the former hotel is just one piece of a larger puzzle. The Scottish Borders Housing Association has also recently purchased two other prominent outlets on Channel Street, with plans to convert them into flats and smaller retail units.

So, what do you think? Is this a much-needed boost for Galashiels, or are there concerns about the impact on the town's character? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
