But then, the power surge faded. Over the next 113 games, he struggled, hitting just 10 homers. Then, just like that, it returned. In the final 20 games, Tatis Jr. crushed seven bombs, propelling the Padres back into the playoffs.
So, what caused the power fluctuations? "Mechanical issues, mostly," Tatis Jr. explains. "It was more about trusting the process." The key to his success lies in the timing between his arms and legs. When he gets his front foot down and keeps his hands back, he detonates baseballs. But when he comes forward too soon, his bat speed wanes, and chaos ensues. This is something he's been working on during the winter.
Embracing the Process: A Mental Battle
While mechanics are crucial, Tatis Jr.'s biggest challenge might be controlling his emotions. "When my head is in the right place, I'm second to none," he says. But last year, his head was elsewhere for a significant portion of the season. So, is he in the right headspace for 2026?
"Absolutely," Tatis Jr. assures. "I'm looking forward to keeping my focus as a player and as a man. I believe my best years are ahead of me. This year will be one of them, but there's no limit. It's up to me to show you all."
