The tragic deaths during the most devastating small boat disaster in the Channel could have been prevented, according to a thorough public inquiry. This investigation, led by former High Court judge Sir Ross Cranston, spans 454 pages and offers a scathing critique of the numerous failures surrounding the tragic loss of at least 24 men, seven women, and two children in November 2021.
The inquiry faced challenges in definitively establishing the total number of individuals aboard the ill-fated vessel. One of the few survivors reported that there were additional passengers, including an Ethiopian man and at least two young children who remain unaccounted for. Disturbingly, those who were on the boat were provided with orange life jackets that seemed inadequate, as they appeared to be stuffed with cotton, rendering them ineffective in keeping individuals afloat.
Sir Cranston’s findings underscore a series of systemic issues, missed chances, and insufficient resources that hampered the UK's maritime search and rescue operations on the night of this tragedy. It was revealed that HM Coastguard operated under dire conditions, facing chronic staff shortages and limited operational capabilities, which directly contributed to their inability to rescue those stranded in the water when help was needed most.
In a bold statement, Cranston called for an immediate halt to small boat crossings, emphasizing, "It is crucial to prevent further loss of life for many reasons. Attempting to cross one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world on a small, overcrowded, and unseaworthy vessel is an inherently perilous endeavor."
