Brace yourself: the Blue Jays are facing a pivotal off-season crossroads, and it centers on one question that could redefine their roster for years to come.
Toronto’s star shortstop Bo Bichette is expected to command a blockbuster deal, likely surpassing the $200 million mark. At the same time, the club has already shown it’s willing to spend big, evidenced by the high-profile pursuit of Dylan Cease as part of a broader plan to return to World Series contention.
Bichette’s durability and defense have been on a bumpy trajectory in recent seasons, which could influence how aggressively the Jays pursue a long-term, mega-contract. If the price tag climbs too steeply, the organization might explore viable alternatives rather than stretching the payroll to its limit.
A recent Bleacher Report feature by Kerry Miller laid out each team’s Plan B for top free agents. For Toronto, Miller highlighted an intriguing, high-reward option: a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte. The idea is to consider life after Bichette without compromising the core talent that carried Toronto to last year’s World Series appearance.
Miller’s rationale is simple: even without Bichette, Toronto’s Opening Day lineup remains stacked with elite players. But if the cost of keeping Bichette near the 200 million threshold feels untenable, trading for Marte becomes an attractive alternative—a move that could deliver a six-year, $103.5 million remaining contract for Marte and inject immediate value into the infield.
The potential downsides are real. Shipping assets to Arizona would require parting with prospects or established contributors to tempt the Diamondbacks. Yet, Marte’s proven impact could outweigh those costs, especially given the financial relief a Marte acquisition could provide compared with an extended Bichette deal.
Marte would also address a defensive concern: his versatility and glove work complement his elite bat. Over the past three seasons, Marte has posted a remarkable 16.0 bWAR with a .283/.368/.519 slash line and about 30 homers per year. At 32, he’s older than Bichette but appears to be operating at peak value, with a contract that could stand out as a bargain in today’s market.
If the goal is to upgrade the roster while maintaining financial flexibility, Marte presents a compelling option for Toronto. Whether Arizona would entertain substantial return for a player of Marte’s caliber remains to be seen, but the potential payoff could justify a bold trade.
As the winter meetings near, all eyes will be on the Marte chatter and whether Toronto steps into the conversation with a serious bid, particularly if negotiations with Bichette stall or derail.
