Audi's F1 debut ignites excitement with successful power unit fire-up
The Audi F1 team has achieved a significant milestone with the successful fire-up of its new power unit in the 2026 chassis. This momentous event has infused the team with an 'incredible energy' and marks a new beginning for the project, according to Mattia Binotto, the head of Audi's Formula 1 project.
This marks a pivotal moment in Audi's F1 journey, as the former Sauber team transitions into a full constructor starting from the upcoming season. Audi's entry into Formula 1 has been a long-term project, but the successful fire-up of the power unit and chassis combination in late December signifies a major breakthrough.
Binotto expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'A fire-up is always a special moment, but this one marks a new beginning. It is the tangible result of our collective ambition and the dedicated work of our teams in Neuburg and Hinwil. Seeing everything come together for the first time gives the entire project incredible energy.'
The first Audi car will soon take to the track, joining the rest of the grid during a private shakedown in Barcelona at the end of this month. This will be followed by pre-season testing in Bahrain in February, with the team's focus shifting towards the first race in Melbourne.
Team principal Jonathan Wheatley emphasized the importance of this achievement, saying, 'This successful fire-up is a critical milestone that validates the quality of the work and collaboration across all departments. It energizes the entire team and provides a clear focus as we prepare for the next phases of development.'
The Audi CEO, Gernot Dollner, has been a strong supporter of the F1 project, viewing it as a key component of the company's brand renewal. Dollner stated, 'For Audi, entering Formula 1 is a key part of our brand’s ongoing renewal. This milestone is a clear demonstration of our 'Vorsprung durch Technik' ambition.'
The fire-up has sparked excitement and pride within the Audi organization, with Dollner adding, 'This project is a catalyst for change, fostering pride, identity, and enthusiasm. Audi will officially unveil its 2026 season, including the full race livery, on January 20 in Berlin, six days before the Barcelona shakedown, building anticipation for the team's F1 debut.
