A shocking development in the world of college football has left fans and analysts alike in a state of surprise and intrigue. Alabama and its offensive line coach, Chris Kapilovic, have gone their separate ways after just two seasons together.
The news broke like a thunderbolt, leaving many to wonder what could have caused such a sudden parting. Kapilovic, who joined the Crimson Tide's coaching staff under Kalen DeBoer, had previously spent four successful seasons at Michigan State.
But here's where it gets controversial: despite high expectations for Alabama's offensive line, the unit fell short of its potential. Three players, Kadyn Proctor, Parker Brailsford, and Jaeden Roberts, were recognized as Preseason All-SEC, yet the line struggled to live up to its billing. Alabama's running game was lackluster, averaging a mere 104.1 yards per game, second-to-last in the SEC. Furthermore, according to Pro Football Focus, the line allowed the most pressures in the conference and was sacked 32 times, the fourth-highest total.
The line's performance was marked by instability. Roberts, once considered a potential NFL draft pick, saw his role reduced to that of a reserve player. Right tackle Wilkin Formby transitioned to right guard, while Geno VanDeMark and Kam Dewberry shared the left guard position. Eight different offensive linemen saw significant playing time, with 170 or more snaps on offense.
And now, the offensive line is essentially starting from scratch. Proctor and Brailsford have declared for the draft, Formby has transferred, and Dewberry and VanDeMark have exhausted their eligibility. Only Michael Carroll, who started six games at right tackle, remains from the previous season's starting lineup.
Alabama's offensive line room has seen significant turnover, with several reserve linemen entering the transfer portal: Olaus Alinen, Arkel Anugwom, Micah DeBose, and Roq Montgomery. However, the Crimson Tide has signed multiple replacements, including Kaden Strayhorn, Ty Haywood, Racin Delgatty, Nick Brooks, Ethan Fields, and Jayvin James.
Additionally, five linemen were part of the 2026 signing class: Jared Doughty, Tyrell Miller, Chris Booker, Bear Fretwell, and Bryson Cooley.
